The Rain Continues

La la la, more rain overnight. Here it still fell throughout the day in on and off waves. Waves of rain falling out of the sky. Waves of water on the golf course.

Yesterday:

A similar angle at 8am this morning:

An hour later the sun attempted to cut through:

Of course, a flooded golf course is nothing in comparison to what people all up and down the east coast are going through at the moment. Latest reports are that, in the area of Lismore, “More than 2000 properties in the region have been declared unlivable and two out of three flood-affected homes in the town will have to be demolished and rebuilt.” As for the dairy farmers of the area, many of them have lost years of development and genetics as their herds were swept away in the raging waters. And this photo below, posted on Facebook today but not credited with its source, shows that the floodwaters reached halfway up the second storey windows of the Lismore library, so now there is nothing left to do but throw out the books. Scenes like this are being replicated in every town on our northern rivers.

Meanwhile, Bill and I were booked to soon spend three nights at an area called Wisemans Ferry on the Hawkesbury River. That township is under evacuation orders at the moment, and we have made the decision to cancel our plans. But I couldn’t get through to the hotel, for the very likely reason that they are boating down the main street right now.

Our thoughts are with all those suffering through this deluge, which shows no signs of abating in the short term.

  1. Your photos of the floods down your way and all the news is not good. We need some rain up here in north Queensland. But do people read these days? Sadly many people don’t. The art of enjoying a good book seems to have gone. One of m favourite stories is of my grandmother who would sit on Spencer Street station with a book and miss her train because she was reading. My mum read too and certainly my siblings and I read. It would be great if the Lismore library could be restocked.

    • I love that story about missing a train through reading! I visited the doctor the other day and she forgot I was in the waiting room. Luckily I had the 900+ page ‘Fortunes of Richard Mahoney’ to keep me quiet.
Lots of fundraisers doing the rounds for Lismore library. The photos have clearly struck a nerve, so there must be plenty of readers still out there. And most of my Facebook feed is from review sites, so rest assured, it is not yet passé. Thanks for stopping by Robin x Gwen

  2. I ‘liked’ this post because we get so little granular reporting on things like this when they’re on the other side of the planet. We haven’t had fires, floods, tornados or drought here in our area (yet). I’m grateful for the pictures, the descriptions, and all the comments above. What a nightmare this is all becoming. Thanks again for the post. Elouise

  3. That’s all looking very grim down your way. I read a piece where your State Premier described the floods as a “one-in-a-thousand year” event. I guess he didn’t get the memo about the Climate Crisis and one of the significant points is that warmer air holds a lot more water. A couple of years ago my daughter was marking exam papers for an undergraduate Earths Sciences climate module and she gave me a simplified explanation of the relationship between increase in air/sea/land temperatures and changes in global weather. All I can say is I feel very, very sorry for the young of our times.

    • It is grim, Agnes. The place we had pre-booked for three nights next week, and whom I had tried to contact to cancel, actually rang us yesterday to cancel our booking as it is full of the SES (State Emergency Service) personnel who are helping with evacuation, rescue, and eventually, clean up. That’s happening all up and down the east coast, and for a surprising distance inland.
Perrottet is our State Premier. Was bumped up from being Treasurer after the previous premier stepped aside, then resigned, while she was being investigated by ICAC (Independent Commission against Corruption). I think I mentioned a while back she got tangled up with the wrong boyfriend, a local member of parliament who has been doing dodgy deals. Now she has a senior executive role at telecommunications giant Optus. Surprise, surprise.
Perrottet is good at making children, six so far and another on the way, but he sees everything through his previous economic lens, and is still to find stride as Premier. Even forgot which office he holds in a recent news conference! Also seems to have forgotten that it is only twelve months since some of the currently affected areas also seriously flooded.
Back in January the prediction was that La Nina would leave us in March. If that is true, then she is going out with a bang, not a whimper.
      We are all doomed …

      • Goodness your politics and politicians sound as bad as ours. Nobody seems to be on top of their brief these days. More than two kids with perhaps a third as a mistake is too much for any human these days. Johnson is up to seven offspring apparently. Hope you can say farewell to La Niña in the very near future.

    • We woke to find the golf course even deeper under water! In fact, if this continues, the water may seep up to our building. That would justify why insurance companies revised our flood risk rating a few years back. Maybe they had inside knowledge. Thanks for following along Marion. xx

  4. Wow, that library photo is a shocker! I work for the University library in Toowoomba and we had some leaks through the roof but nothing like that, still not a great look when some of the shelves are covered in plastic tarpaulins to protect from leaks. Interesting times we are living through, just wish life would go back to being a little less interesting.
At least it is good weather for reading.

    • My husband has just sped through a book that he didn’t even particularly like! Times are sure getting desperate.
How interesting you are at the Toowoomba Uni library. We were up that way a few years back but at the time were not in contact with you or the lady from Book’d Out. How devastated would you feel if you have to throw out your books!

    • It’s heartbreaking – but what can they do? The scenes of water soaked belongings piling up as rubbish in the streets is so depressing. And there is a video of a 300 strong herd of dairy cows being swept along as the owner watched helplessly. Only 15 recovered. So much devastation.
